Dyson Vacuum Cleaner History

The Dyson vacuum cleaner was invented by James Dyson who was born on 2nd May 1947.

Some time in the late 1970's Dyson set out to create the first vacuum cleaner that wouldn't lose suction. His inspiration for the idea came from his frustration with the poor performance he was getting from his Hoover Junior vacuum that he owned. The performance problems came from dirt clogging up in the bag which results in a loss of suction. - This problem still exists in many vacuum cleaners today.

Dyson knew he needed to create a bag-less cleaner. This is where he came up with the idea of using cyclonic separation. Dyson got to work with his ideas & after five years of hard work he launched the "G Force" bag-less v-cleaner in 1983, but there was a problem.

Dyson Vacuum Cleaner History

When Dyson tried to launch his new product into the U.K. Market he was faced with rejection. No distributor or manufacturer would take his product to market as it was in danger of damaging the v-cleaner bag market which was worth a lot of money.

Dyson had to look at launching his bag-less cleaner in another country so he turned to Japan. He was successful & his product was soon being sold through a catalogue & was on sale for £2,000. This may seem like a lot of money but there was no other product like this anywhere in the world.

He filed a U.S patent on his new invention which was granted in 1986. His product went on to win the International Design Fair prize in Japan in 1991.

Dyson eventually broke into the U.K market around 10 years after his first idea for the bag-less v-cleaner & his breakthrough came form a TV advert he put out. His advert described how his product was far superior to his competition by showing how his vacuum cleaner did not require the changing of bags & it did not lose suction.

The Dyson vacuum cleaner is now well known for the "Ball" feature where the idea actually came from his brother. This idea was not original intended for the vacuum cleaner but for a wheelbarrow where a ball replaced the wheel. This invention was named the Ballbarrow but it never caught on. However in 2005 Dyson introduced the ball feature to his vacuum cleaner which makes it more manoeuvrable.

Dyson went on to out sell all his competitors in the U.K market & achieved sever awards for his inventions.

A Guide to Industrial Vacuum Cleaners

Industrial vacuum cleaners are designed with two basic functions in mind - the removal of debris of all types from the floor and the removal of debris of all types from the air in the working environment. The first application was tricky, to say the least, but the specific needs were dealt with until systems and units were produced that could handle almost any type of debris from the floor of a manufacturing company.

At first, the size of the debris was a question to be dealt with. Then there were wet and dry items that needed to be dealt with simultaneously. Extremely hot or corrosive elements were added to the mix and then radioactive debris had to be taken into account. All of this debris, a bi-product of some sort of manufacturing or large-scale commercial operation, had to be dealt with by vacuum cleaner manufacturers. Often, the special requirements of a company were dealt with on a case-by-case basis at the same time as the new plant was being constructed.

Similarly, airborne debris, dust and microscopic particles of whatever was being produced in the shop had to be removed from the air, either to protect the workers or to gather and store the valuable materials to keep from losing them. Huge vacuum cleaners were mounted on rooftops, and behind the factories themselves, that resembled air-conditioning units more closely than vacuum cleaners. But they performed precisely the opposite function. Where air-conditioners cool and then pump air into the factory to keep temperatures comfortable and controlled, these huge vacuum cleaners are sucking the air out of the factories, either from the ceiling levels or from beneath the floor, filtering out the debris and keeping it accessible during cleaning.

Factories that produce fine particulate debris as part of their manufacturing process need to maintain a safe breathing environment for their workers and those companies that are refining a valuable metal need to collect the particulates for later re-use. Both functions are amply served by today's industrial vacuum cleaners.
